Head for the amazing natural trails of The Lake District and take your skills to new levels with some professional tuition. These one-day or multi-day programmes offer superb rider development, from novice to mountain singletrack enthusiast, all from our trail centre at Staveley in the South Lakes (just 15 minutes from the M6 and 3 hours by train from London).
Skills Course days and "Part 2" Coaching Ride days
We run all courses as one day stand alone courses, with focussed tuition and sessions on a whole range of skills. The following day is the "Part 2" coaching ride day, guided by an expert leader / coach who will give tips and shoot video feedback but all as part of a more flowing Lake District journey. It's the ideal way to consolidate all that you learned on day 1, a useful skills refresher, or a great stand-alone day if you prefer to mix more ride time into your tuition. On long weekends you can also combine two courses, if you feel ready for more rapid progression.
Get Started (Core Skills) Course (level 1) This course teaches you the right skills in the right way - ideal for complete novices or those who are currently riding easier trails and want to progress to intermediate level mountain biking terrain. You’ll learn about body position for riding on descents and technical climbs, how and when to control your speed, handle corners, pick lines, control direction and vision, and blaze through difficult terrain. The aim is to make you a confident and safe biker, equipped to hit the trails and have some fun.
To progress as a mountain biker you need to flow through trails with balance, control and the ability to move yourself and your bike around with confidence. This is where our mountain bike trail skills course comes in – as you learn to manual the front wheel over rocks and roots on descents, wheelie over steps on climbs, and develop your endo, rear wheel lift and start to link these moves together in real trail situations.
If you can stay on for the part 2 second day you’ll be taken on a ride that lets you practice all of this and more, as you complete a superb loop and return to view your progress on screen at Wheelbase (after grabbing coffee and cake at Wilf’s next door, of course!)
If you want to handle black graded trails and technical mountain routes with confidence, style and flow – this is the course for you. We look at all aspects of your riding as we tackle rocky descents, bunny hops, pumping for speed and control, advanced line choice, riding step ups and clearing extreme climbs. There are few places in the UK where you can challenge yourself like you can here, under the watchful eyes of some of the best coaches in the country.
The part 2 ride out, if you sign up for it, will be a mountain epic to test you, thrill you and let you enjoy your new skills in real riding situations. As with the course on day 1, the ride will include some video taking so we can review your new skills at the end of the day, and post footage of your progress to our YouTube and Facebook pages.

“We chose Chris Ford and the CycleActive instructors for our Olympic Talent Team Camp because of their infectious enthusiasm and unique brand of skills coaching. The training was pitched at exactly the right level for our riders who all made real progress during the weekend.”
Chris Furber, British Cycling Olympic Talent Coach.
“Just a few hours spent training with Chris Ford of CycleActive made me realise how much I have to learn… After a morning cycling with Ford I was flinging my bike and body round sharp corners and slippery descents, and climbing hills I wouldn’t even have attempted the day before.”
Alison Hamlett, Editor, Triathlete’s World magazine
Video Feedback and Online Review
On many of our courses we now use video to assist with your skills development. This is at the discretion of the instructor, as its use depends on where we are, the weather conditions and the requirements of the group. If you wish we can load video content onto our YouTube or Facebook pages so that you can review online, get additional feedback or ideas from our full coaching team, and benefit from your course for many months afterwards. You can also load up your own videos for us to give feedback on as you improve after the course – that’s all part of the service.
