Hadrian's Cycleway Coast to Coast Bike Ride Over 4 Days
Cycling Hadrian’s Wall 122 miles
The Best 4 Day Coast to Coast Route
In an attempt to keep the ‘unruly’ Scots at bay, Emperor Hadrian started constructing his world-famous wall in AD 122, spanning from Bowness-on-Solway in the west to Wallsend in the east.
This stunning UNESCO World Heritage site sees hundreds of thousands of people visit its many locations each year, ranging from the impressive Roman Fort at Vindolanda to the 12th-century Priory at Lanercost. Cycling Hadrian's Wall along the Hadrian's Wall cycle route allows you to truly immerse yourself in the area’s rich history, giving you a taste of what it would have been like to be posted to this once-distant outpost of the mighty Roman Empire.
Pairing the 122 miles of Hadrian's Cycleway with four days of riding allows plenty of time to visit the sights along the way, making this cycling holiday a much more relaxed affair than our hugely popular three-day version. All styles of bike are welcome on this tour, with eBike charging facilities and road-bike-friendly sealed surfaces right across this coast to coast route.
The border city of Carlisle is where this tour starts and finishes. Ideally located on the M6 motorway and West Coast Main Line, it offers easy travel by both car and rail.

On the first riding day, we transfer you out to the coastal town of Silloth, where you will pedal alongside the stunning Solway Coast back to Carlisle for a second night. The following days see you staying overnight in Haltwhistle, the geographical centre of Britain, along with the riverside towns of Wylam or Newburn, before finishing at the mouth of the River Tyne in the aptly named Tynemouth.
From the finish on the busy east coast, you can opt for a transfer back to Carlisle, or collect your luggage and start your onward journey—heading into Newcastle by bike, taxi, or Metro to catch a homeward train.
